Cambodian Government Commits Over $170 Million to Healthcare Enhancement

PHNOM PENH, April 22, 2024 — In a boost to the healthcare sector, the Cambodian government has pledged to invest more than $170 million in strengthening the capacity of health centers throughout the nation.

Prime Minister Hun Manet announced the substantial financial commitment during the inauguration of the new Japan-funded Centre of Surgical Service at Siem Reap Provincial Referral Hospital earlier today.

The Prime Minister outlined a strategic plan aimed at enhancing healthcare services across Cambodia. This plan includes increasing funding, modernizing facilities, and expanding the availability of healthcare professionals, ensuring that doctors are on duty around the clock.

Furthermore, health centers will be equipped with ambulances for transporting patients to referral hospitals or more advanced medical facilities. This initiative is part of a broader effort to bolster regional hospitals, improving the efficiency of treatments and alleviating the need for patients to travel to Phnom Penh for medical care.

Hun Manet emphasized the critical need for timely medical interventions to save lives and called on medical professionals to adhere to the highest standards of ethical practice. He stressed the importance of equitable treatment, insisting that no citizen should face discrimination in accessing healthcare services.

This significant funding initiative marks a pivotal step forward in the government’s efforts to ensure comprehensive and accessible healthcare for all Cambodians.
